I know that there has been a lot of controversy with the cut “autographs” of Barack Obama which have been released by sports card companies. Yes, some  of those did look like forgeries and autopen signatures.

Tips for Buying Obama Signatures

As you know, there are so many forgeries of President Obama’s signature all over the web. Forgeries of Obama’s signature are so much more common than most people think. Barack Obama’s signature is forged so often because it is such a simple looking signature; many people don’t know that the simplicity of his signature also makes it easy to spot a fake.

I do not plan to post many specific examples or diagrams on how to authenticate the signature of Barack Obama. This is because I feel that these examples can easily be used to forge Obama signatures as well. I will, however, continually post tips detailing ways to find an authentic signature. Here are a few:

1. Never (ever, ever, ever) purchase a signature unless the seller is willing to guarantee the signature to pass PSA/DNA or JSA authentication. Be sure that you get the seller to send a signed letter detailing the guarantee when he/she sends your signature.

2. Be (even more) cautious when purchasing signed photos, baseballs, basketballs, or other similar items. This is because these items were typically never collected by assistants to be signed at rallies. Most of the time, only books and magazines were collected. I have seen some pretty outrageous things that people claim were signed by Obama. Among these items were a baseball bat and, most recently, a sword (yes, a long, pointy sword). Besides for the fact that the signatures on these items were blatant forgeries, it is obvious that a baseball bat or a sword probably wouldn’t be able to get too close to the president or a presidential candidate.

3. Has the seller sold similar items? You can check by looking at the sellers other listings and by looking at the sellers recent feedback. If the seller has sold multiple Obama signatures, chances are, they are forgeries.

4. Avoid signed note cards. Many people buy signed note cards because they can be bought cheaply. Do remember, though, that many celebrities and politicians do not sign note cards or blank sheets of paper. I do not know if Obama will sign a note card, but I do know that I have not yet seen one which I believed to be authentically signed.

I have not yet gained expert status (partially because I do not know what constitutes one in this field), but I am very educated when it comes to the Obama signature. Forgeries and One Way to Avoid Them Cheaply

Ever since becoming a national figure, Barack Obamas signature has been forged in high numbers. A lot of these forgeries are available on Craigslist and eBay. Forgers know that their Obama signatures look terrible, but that doesnt matter. Even the worst forgeries still sell for hundreds on eBay.

That is why I say there are two problems to forgeries on eBay; the forger, and the buyer. Before spending hundreds on an Obama autograph, please, please, please be sure it is real.

Although I am not a huge fan of authentication companies, there are only two which I trust when it comes to authenticating Barack Obamas signature; PSA/DNA and JSA. If you are going to buy an Obama signature on eBay and you do not want to pay hundreds more because it has an LOA from one of these companies, you dont have to. PSA/DNA has a “quick opinion” service. You simply pay $7.49, and within 24-36 hours, they will send you their quick opinion on the authenticity of the autograph.

No, I am not affiliated with PSA DNA or JSA in any way. I can simply say that their authentication on eBay has been consistently correct when it comes to Barack Obamas signature. Although PSA DNA states that the only way to be sure of autograph authenticity is to “physically examine it,” $7.49 isnt much considering it could save you hundreds. Plus, you get $7.49 in credit towards PSA DNAs regular authetication fee if you shall choose to send the signature in to them.

Forgeries on eBay are so much more common than most people think. Forgeries are listed every single day; to the trained eye, they are easy to spot; but to someone unfamiliar with Obamas autograph, they all look the same. Only we can stop this crazy purchasing of forged Obama signatures, please, do your research before buying.

There are many other ways to determine the authenticity of Barack Obama’s signature. I will post more occasionally. Please check back often.

(PS: I am happy to offer you my opinion on Obamas signature at no charge. Although I am not an expert like those at PSA and JSA, I am still very familiar with the signature of Obama.)

Barack Obama Preprint and Autopen Signatures

Many people in public office do not have time to hand sign all of the responses that their office sends out. Because of this, many use autopen machines. An autopen is a machine which uses a pen or a marker to sign an item. Many times, these signatures look authentic. If a signature has a very even looking pressure and large pressure points (especially at the beginning and end of the signature), chances are, it was signed with an autopen machine. Here are some autopenned signatures of Barack Obama:

Remember, if you have a signature that looks extremely close to any of these, but has a different thickness, it can still be an autopenned signature.

Of course, I was extremely disappointed, even with a handshake. Without an autograph, or at least a picture of me shaking his hand, how would anyone ever believe that I really met him. The biggest disappointment fell upon myself, though. About 30 minutes before the rally, secret service and body guards came around and asked for books or magazines that people wanted signed by Barack Obama backstage. I did not have a book or a magazine to be signed, they told me that he would not be able to sign my note card backstage.

That is where the obsession began. Since then, I have done countless hours of research on Barack Obamas autograph. I can tell whether a signature is authentic or forged with the blink of an eye. I do not know what would constitute expert status, but I do consider myself extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the signature of Barack Obama.
